Christopher Columbus: Hero or Villain?
Here’s an interesting questions that everyone wants to know but is afraid to ask. In our culture he is an target, a blame of all terrible that has happened to America. It goes as far as people even protesting Columbus Day, caling him a rapist, murderer, etc. Yet people fail get the real facts, the actual evidence on him and what he did, they just go by personal opinions that they hear and pass them on. It is a estimated fact that when Columbus reached the Americas in 1492 there were aprox. 30-50 million Natives, by the end of 1500’s around 2 million were left. they mostly died of diseases the Europeans brought with them.A fact that the spread of diseases was on both sides, Europeans bought over smallpox and measles but also the Natives gave them syphilis. Now the Europeans, not just Columbus who I’m sure did not go around the Islands trying to infect everyone. Those Europeans were the Spanish Conquistators who heard about the New World and it’s Gold, who were interest in a conquest instead a voyage like Columbus. Just in case someone didn’t know, Columbus sailed out for the Spanish Rolalty to seek a shorter route to the east indies (Asia) to make their spice trade shorter and easier. It was an exploration voyage not a conquest to take over America because he didn’t even know America existed. Once Europeans heard of the riches the New World had, they all swarmed in to get their share. So i think it’s unfair to potray Columbus as a villain, rapist (there is no evidence he had raped anyone) and even in his own personal blogs, he has stated clearly that he did not allow his crew to rape, trade unfairly with the native. So don’t follow peoples personal opinion, follow the actual facts. Yes Columbus is no saint but compared to Hernan Cortes and what he did, he might as well be.
Columbus was known as a hustler and flim-flam man all over Europe, people tried to warn the Spanish Crown about him. Spain had expelled the Jews in 1490, meaning the bankers had taken their gold and went elsewhere, so Ferdinand and Isabella were ripe for a crap shoot.
Columbus had a horrible reputation as a sailor, too. He treated his crews unfairly, falsified logs and couldn’t navigate (as he proved when he accidentally "discovered" the West Indies). Everyone knew the world was round, how big it was and that there was a land mass between Europe and Asia. The vikings had built a town in North America 500 years before Columbus, and the Irish monk, Brendan, had been here several hundred years before that.
Columbus is mainly famous for being Italian and his "day" is every bit as political as MLK day or "Hispanic Pride Day".
He was certainly no hero.
